Things have been Carol-tastic lately and so I wanted to round up some of these pieces for you all before it’s all over and also talk about some exciting new stuff to come.
For the links there's of course lots of JEFF, BLACK CLOAK and THE CULL being discussed in most of this stuff too, but it does trend pretty CAPTAIN MARVEL heavy as our last issue is imminent! *
*FYI on “imminent”: there seems to be some disagreement about whether CAPTAIN MARVEL #50 releases on 6/7/23 or 6/14/23. I have it on good authority that it’s 6/14, but I guess we’ll all find out together? Keep your eyes peeled!
I did a Captain Marvel interview with Charles Hartford at ButWhyTho.
I also did an interview with my pal Dave Richards at CBR.
And a couple podcast interviews — David Harper and I talked the Fonz (what!?!) and more on his excellent SKTCHD.
And Nick Jones and I talked all sorts of fun nonsense over on Focused On Comics.
Just today Marvel did a pretty cool “Captain Marvel” retrospective thing — highlighting moments from this 50 issue run (which is something I was also going to do on here soon to celebrate the end — great minds!)
Last week the “KELLY THOMPSON CAPTAIN MARVEL VOL 1” OMNIBUS hit the world and the world has never been the same (that’s what I heard!)
As mentioned previously, it’s really gorgeous — check out the deep dive video below! AND in very good news, they’ve announced plans for the second volume! Woo!
In non-Cap news, Multiversity had some very kind words for our upcoming THE CULL. ;D
Also, gird your loins for next week when I will finally get to start teasing my next big non-Image project. I am SO EXCITED to start sharing this with you guys.
In non-ME news, my pal Ed Brisson is doing some very cool things at DC and AWA (and more) — including his super exciting new book THE SINS OF THE SALTON SEA (it’s excellent! Art by CP Smith, lettering by Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou) and you can learn more about it in his podcast interview with my other pal Matthew Rosenberg on Ideas Don’t Bleed.
Even though Matt is on punishment right now (he knows what he did!) I’m still going to recommend this excellent new post of his about what he’s got coming on his Substack. He shows off some stuff about the upcoming project, but mostly he talks pretty honestly about being a writer and that process and how it all works. Good stuff.
This is a rather anemic “What I’m Doing” simply because while I have been ingesting lots of media that I’m excited to talk to you all about, we don’t have time for that today, however I DID want to mention a great article I really enjoyed today. I’m a huge Ryan Gosling fan (he’s maybe my favorite actor?) I find him absolutely transfixing in basically everything I’ve ever seen him in (even movies I don’t particularly like), but I also just deeply enjoy who he seems to be as a human (I say “seems” not to imply that there is a charade afoot, but simply because I obviously don’t know him personally). ANYWAY. Surprising nobody, he is absolutely charming as fuck in this GQ interview. But here’s one of my favorite bits from the piece:
There are also some very swoon-y and handsome cowboy-vibes photos if you’re into that kind of thing (and who wouldn’t be?!).
Quick sidebar to highlight the Top 5 Gosling movies:
Drive
Blue Valentine
Blade Runner 2049
The Nice Guys
Half Nelson/The Big Short (tie!)
Okay, back to our regularly scheduled programing (though if you want to tell me YOUR Top 5 Gosling Movies in the comments I won’t hate it).
In update news — we’ve finally finished my comics inventory here — which means I’m one step closer to re-opening the webstore. I hope it will be next week — but as promised I’ll include a post with a Subscriber’s Only discount code when it opens.
I haven’t really talked about the current WGA Writer’s Strike on here much… I just sort of take for granted that if you’re following me and/or are a fan in some capacity, you know where I fall on this. But for clarity. I SUPPORT THE UNION.
It’s obviously especially important to me this time around since it will have huge ramifications on me, my partner, and our industry; but it’s pretty much always a good idea to support unions, which support WORKERS.
I mentioned in May that I was developing some things for the future of this Substack and I’m back to report that that is going VERY well. I had a really exciting call this week, so things are moving forward in a great direction. But it’s still going take a minute before I can un-pause the billing and get that new paid content running again, but I have a real plan for this additional/new stuff that I’m very excited about now and I hope you will be too.
I don’t have much to show with some projects still on lock down, but here’s a last peek at CAPTAIN MARVEL #50:
I am gonna miss these kids a lot. :( Especially since I definitely didn’t get enough time with Jen, Jones, or Monica. <3 Hopefully we will meet again someday!
Really just peak “pretty carol with absolutely perfect hair” — it’s really hard to beat Javier’s Carol and I confess I love that he draws her with this gorgeous hair, but I also love that he’s not afraid to get muscley with her. I feel super lucky we got both Javi and David Lopez on this last issue — it just felt right. <3
Ooh! A Harley Panel — I can’t do many of these, it’s only a short story after all, but I can probably squeeze in one or two! This is art/colors by Annie Wu! HARLEY QUINN: BLACK WHITE & REDDER #2:
And BLACK CLOAK #6: Hard to share stuff from this issue as it’s just RIFE with spoilers, but I tried. LOOK AT THESE COLORS!
Sunlight powered.
As mentioned above, things are moving forward in a very interesting way on some projects I’m considering for this Substack and one that I’m very excited about is an all-new serialized (here on Substack) PROSE story that includes a sort of “Choose Your Own Adventure” element where paid subscribers would vote for the direction the story takes (at key points throughout). This is most likely a story set in the STORYKILLER world (though would be fairly new reader friendly) — and I would write it sort of — in tandem with you guys voting?
So it’s more of an organic (and far less polished) process — but I think it might be a really fun and interesting thing to experiment with on here. One of my good friends/colleagues thinks this is a great idea. Another thinks it’s a bad idea. So we’re gonna see what YOU think, before I decide.
SO, HERE’S YOUR OFFICIAL QUESTION: Am I interested in an all-new STORYKILLER prose tale, where paid subscribers get to vote (like a Choose Your Own Adventure tale) at key points throughout the process?
Okay. I’ll check back soon to see what you guys think. I’ve got to get back to work, but I hope you’re all doing well and enjoying PRIDE and have something lovely planned for the weekend or for at least A WEEKEND in June. <3

So excited to see what’s coming up. Speaking of Ryan Gosling, this guy needs more comedy. Look up Papyrus Ryan Gosling on YouTube. It lives on my head rent free since it’s debut and I see Papyrus everywhere.
Storykiller CYOA?! Oh man ... could be dangerous giving us that kind of power. 😂 So we should definitely do it!
Really excited for the big secret announcement! 👀
Captain Marvel #50 is gonna be so bittersweet! What an amazing run. ♥️
Hmmm ... will need to research more Gosling movies. For science, of course. 😜
