Laura v Deadpool would be so fun. I'd love to see Gwenpool on the sidelines eating popcorn

X-Men War unh! What is it good for? Quite a bit, actually! For example, it’s super fun to think about and it momentarily distracts from the crappity-crap of the real world. So, thank goodness for that, am I right or am I right or am I right?

Anyway, sad to see the Beast get absolutely trounced in this round. No matter what twists and turns these characters get saddled with in their decades-long runs in the comics, Dr. Hank McCoy will always be thoughtful, brilliant, and sweet-natured at his core in my heart. But, yeah… Jean mops the floor with his furry, blue butt.

Polaris v Iceman was a fun one. That’s what’s so great about this game. I had to stop and really imagine their battle. And I was pretty stymied. You can really see how both of them would get some great shots in. And both would have formidable defenses to the other’s powers. I went with Polaris. Because… um… magnetism beats cold this time?

Deadpool v Wolverine!!! Holy guacamole! Laura wins in my book. Maybe purely on will. But EPIC fight.

I went with Professor X over Mystique with the theory that he’d be able to track and subdue her no matter what form she took. But I’m second guessing that now. If both combatants are squared of against each other and there’s kind of a “3… 2… 1… Fight” scenario, then Charles could/should win. If Mystique can ambush Charles, he’s toast.

Rogue v Armor hurt me. I think Rogue wins but Armor is very, very, very tough, smart, and cool.

Weirdly, the vote for Magneto v Phoenix was already set when I got to that one. Magneto got the nod, which is what I *think* I would have done…? (But I also *think* I’d give it to Jean Grey over Magneto, which is interesting to me. Maybe Jean’s experience makes the difference for me? Well, maybe I’ll get the chance to ponder it further in the next round!)

Anyway, I really like X-Men War. Thanks for bringing it back!

Nice.

Agree on Mystique. I just think she's so diabolical she would have a plan even in the "3,2,1 fight scenario" I guess I give her Batman-power. ;D

Sounds like we were largely on the same page though.

Great stuff here! I disagree with Prof vs Mystique, but otherwise spot on and you are smart (like me).

Oof. These are hard! The only one I feel bitter about from the first round is Banshee as I I think he is often underestimated, and I suspect his scream would penetrate Armor’s armor.

Also: the Domino vs Gambit poll may have closed prematurely just fyi. I also would have gone Gambit, as Domino may have luck power, but he blows things up and if these fights are as epic as I think they would be he would blow up a lot of stuff and at some point her luck would run out

Do we have a reason for why we think Banshee's power can penetrate Armor's shield? I mean, optic blasts can't, adamantium can't.... when I used her in Captain Marvel in the future storyline she was literally being used as an impenetrable dome to shield humans from the ravages of atomic war... ? If Banshees screams can get through I maybe shouldn't have done that. lol

Re: Domino/Gambit. ARRRGHHH!

I put up a new poll (the other must have accidentally been set to close in an hour, instead of 24 hours). If you didn't get to vote in that match, please vote in the new one, everyone. Thanks for the heads up Lodro!

Okay - my theory (and no, this is not based on something on panel, sorry y'all) is that certain things can still affect Armor - like blinding her or, in Banshee's case, blowing out her eardrums, because she can still see and hear beyond her armor, right? So, a theory. Loving the comments friends!

Huh. Interesting.

There's definitely some logic there -- but I guess I would say, even if visual/auditory (and maybe other sense issues?) can get through in some capacity, I'd suspect the Armor would still blunt those effects to make her largely able to resist them? But I also think it's hard to argue that a Dazzler light show or Banshee scream can penetrate but things like (arguably more powerful) optic blasts and Adamantium can't... that breaks my brain a little?

I can certainly be wrong here, but my take with Hisako is that it's more likely that she will fall victim to lost energy/strain/concentration and the actual Armor failing rather than it not being able to stop one kind of attack over another.

BUT part of me (the part that loves Dune so much probably) likes the idea of "the slow knife can penetrate the shield" -- kind of a thing. It's fun, I think it just possibly gets messy when you've got a character being written by a lot of different writers over a long period of time, y'know?

This comment just reminded me that early on, Wolverine’s claws did piece her armor (I want to say early Whedon run). But – similarly – this is making my brain hurt. I think your inclination toward things like light and screams being deadened by the time they hit her body makes sense.

I think you're right and maybe Adamantium DID get through? But with like... a lot of effort? Gods, my memories are so mushy, it's shameful.

And also: this was when she had two days of training in her powers. In that sense it's awesome to see you write Future Armor with such mastery of her skills. And that, to come full circle, is where I thought maybe Banshee could get the drop on her: he is the old-timer who has a lot of tricks up his sleeve about how to use his power and she's still at the point of figuring out subtlety with what she does. Okay. Thank you for indulging my curiosity.

I had my argument in favor of my boy ready to go too. Lol.

Basically, from childhood, Gambit is used to everything going spectacularly wrong and rolling with it. He almost always manages to come out on top. So, I don't think her luck powers could throw anything at him that he couldn't get out of.

Madrox winning with the zap brannigan strategy. Just sending wave after wave of his own men until the other side gets tired.

Also, heck yeah domino wins. Longshot, you shoulda had that last round. Sorry my dude.

Re: Madrox. Exactly.

You think Longshot beats Laura Wolverine? I'm interested in this theory...

Expand full comment
mike g's avatar

Right on. I think it’s all the little things that can go wrong that would go wrong for Laura. Like her claws fail to deploy or retract at inopportune times, the surfaces she is standing on give way or she slips. I don’t think there’s anything super catastrophic that would happen because that is really unlikely with her.

But also Laura is an in close fighter and longshot could keep her on the move with surprise tactics and range. If she manages to close or he makes a single mistake, super done, but also little mistakes tend to work out for him. Location as well, if it’s a hallway fight, not a chance for Longshot, but urban environment, a grindy win, but I think it can happen. In my head the fight was an urban environment, so W to Longshot. 😀

That said, Laura rules and is the best Wolverine. Fight me Logan stans. Haha

Round 1: Cerese beats Colossus was close? Sorry, Piotr!

Pixie win over Quicksilver shows that MCU screen time not a factor.

Multiple Man had to cheat to get all those votes to beat Dazzler.

Now, LFG!!!

Magik beats Cable because you can timeslip yourself, but you can teleport your opponent. (Points at big brain meme)

Jean beats Beast by using her "every man loves me" mind control it's so strong she doesn't even know when it's on anymore.

Polaris beats Iceman because who says he's so ultra?

Laura beats Wade because who has blades in their feet? I mean, c'mon! But that would be a hell of a fight and have to last three issues.

Mystique beats Chuckie by shapeshifting into Lilandra and telling him to take out the trash.

Spiral beats Pixie, and I wanted this to be a better fight, but six arms beats however many wings Pixie has.

Monet beats Psylocke because I want to see more Monet and I can't figure out Psylocke's backstory. Oh, this is *not* a popularity contest? Really?

Multiple Man beats Cerise because we already know from the first round that Madrox is using multiples to stuff the ballot box. And that is wrong, by the way. I still don't know who Cerise is, I'm sorry.

Magneto beats Phoenix because that is not Jean Phoenix (see above, I'm still in love with Jean).

White Queen beats Sunspot because, frankly, Emma is very smart. And uh, telepathy.

Domino beats Gambit because he plays cards and she is lucky and luck wins at cards. Honestly, this is a tough one, and I would watch this movie all the way through.

I love these battles, especially the ones that pit favorites against each other (ie Armor vs Rogue). But those battles where both have healing factors are ROUGH. I went Laura (besides obvious fan boy reason) because I think wade would mess around too much. Laura would gut him and move on to the next. Hopefully Gabby doesn't see the fight!
