… the POWERPUFF GIRLS!
I am over the moon to talk about doing some POWERPUFF GIRLS comics for Dynamite comics starting in July!
There’s not much I can share just now beyond linking to the announcement that went out today at AIPT and show off the covers, but I do want to say that I am delighted to get a chance to do some more all-ages comics in the same vein as IT’S JEFF. Obviously the POWERPUFF GIRLS talk a lot more than my boi Jeff, but there’s a similar art to making something that works for kids and is still charming and funny for adults, and I hope we’ve captured that magic from IT’S JEFF and brought it over to the Puffs.
These first three issues I’m doing are all “stand alone” issues — and the first issue does some really fun things playing with forms in the narrative. As always, Paulina’s work is a delight! I hope you guys will really enjoy it.
In the meantime, here are all the #1 covers!
First up, a gorgeous offering from my fav and yours, Leonardo Romero:
Super fun variant by Nicoletta Baldari:
And Karen S. Darboe’s awesome offering is a 3-part connecting cover — each featuring one of the girls, Bubbles first, ‘natch:
You may have also seen in the wild last week, DC’s Solicits for July — which include my girls the BIRDS OF PREY getting pre-historic with things.
First up, Leonardo Romero’s main cover, which is one of my favs from this run. He’s such a smart artist — the way he lays things out — you get so many layers of action, but it never feels confused or muddled or overworked. LOVE IT.
I’ll show off the other three covers below as well, but first I just wanted to talk a little bit about this wild arc we’re leaping into. As you guys know — at the end of Issue 8 the ladies all went willingly into a portal that had sucked Barbara Gordon into it.
The portal conceit meant that we had an opportunity to lean into different artists and styles for each “world” — and so we leaned ALL THE WAY IN.
BIRDS OF PREY 9 kicks off arc 3 — called WORLDS WITHOUT END —and begins a series of 5 awesome artists taking on the book — all unified by Jordie Bellaire’s incredible colors.
Jonathan Case is our first artist (you may know him from — among other things — that recent incredible mostly silent issue of BATGIRL!) Case is creating our “nightmare Gotham” that the Birds first encounter when going through the portal. Here’s a couple tiny peeks:
BIRDS OF PREY 10 finds Robbi Rodriguez taking on “Barda’s World” — which may not mean quite what you expect — and includes Rodriguez designs for two exciting new characters that I hope will make a big impact on the BIRDS OF PREY.
BIRDS OF PREY 11 gets us back the glorious Javier Pina and — as you can see from the covers on offer — dinotastic outfits AND obstacles.
BIRDS OF PREY 12 brings in an artist I am DEEPLY excited about and I think you will be too, but I don’t know that I’m allowed to say who it is yet since it’s not been announced.
BIRDS OF PREY 13 will have Gavin Guidry wrapping up the arc — and he’ll also be doing some “real world cutaways” throughout the arc as Meridian, Zealot, and others try to free the Birds from the Portal.
It’s going to be a truly wild ride and while I hope everyone loves it, I also really hope everyone can get into the spirit of the idea. We want to tell incredibly fun — and hopefully complex and interesting stories about these ladies — but we also want to play with the form a little bit and experiment as we have been doing from the start — and I hope you’ll all find it more than worth the price of admission. <3
Okay, here’s the rest of those issue 11 covers:
Love this awesome offering from Melnikov. Super fun Dinah and Barda. Love Cass watching the skies. Zealot IS in this issue, but she will not be seeing any dinosaurs, fyi!
Even more intense on the dinosaur action is this wild offering from Serg Acuna!
And from Chris Ng, the 1:25 incentive cover featuring Cass and Sin/Megaera:
And last but not least — I hope you all saw Mattia’s incredible BATMAN #150 cover (July) — it’s his first ever DC work — and his first BATMAN work — so give him a round of applause! Surprising absolutely nobody, it’s STUNNING.
Okay. Time to get back to work, but I hope you liked this announcement today. I have another BIG ONE coming in June I believe.
I’ll be sending out an email on Wednesday about THE CULL trade — which finally releases this week — and is available in my webstore now!
Promo for BLACK CLOAK is starting up in earnest here at the end of this month.
AND, my life turning into a disaster area a few months back, means I have totally neglected to do our monthly paid backer winners! So you know what that means…mass winnings! I’ll do a drawing this weekend and I think we’ll be giving out like…7 or 8 winner packages (including original sketch covers). Stay tuned next week to see if you’re a (long overdue) winner! ;D
Thanks for hanging in there with me as I try to get things back on track, guys. It’s been an adventure and I am eternally grateful for your grace and patience over here as I figure things out. <3
Kelly
I know nothing about PPG but here’s an inspirational story: when I worked at Toys R Us circa 2002, a little girl (5?) came in with her mom and wanted a particular Bubbles figure. I found it for her and gave it to her and she gave it a big hug - it still inside its plastic figure packaging - and said “I love you, Bubbles.” So cute ☺️
Ahhhh congrats on the new boom Kelly! Back to Birds, I love how you and the team thought of a fun and creative way to weave in the different artists so they make sense for the story when the style changes. Gives both an in world and (without for a better term) our world context to the visual changes and it’s just super clever. Been loving it so far! 💙
