You on BoP (especially with this creative team!) is a dream come true and I know you’ll do Cass proud.

Very excited for your BoP run and I completely trust your character selection. For someone like me, who doesn't have a lot of history with Cassandra but *does* have The DC Universe Infinite Ultra Extreme Ultimate Comics app... any suggestions for great Cassandra Cain stories I should read to get acquainted with her?

Definitely check out her solo series (Batgirl) from 2000. I also loved her run in Batman & Robin Eternal and Detective Comics circa 2016. She is one of my favorite characters of all time-ENJOY!

Yes! bill is right. Cass's original series from 2000 is GREAT. Obviously it's 20+ years old, so there are some bits that don't age perfectly, but it's very solid. Although I typically stop in the high 60s I think? There's an evil Cass arc that resolves...okay, but it's just not fun/good. It starts to feel like a different Cass in not a great way. Her actual debut is in Batman No Man's Land I believe -- which has a lot of other good stuff in there too -- worth the read!

Thanks a bunch, Bill! I know I could just Google Cassandra Cain and pick out various books or runs but I was hoping to hear suggestions from real fans of hers. I'll definitely check these out in advance of her appearance in Kelly's Birds of Prey!

Good deal! I hope you enjoy those books. Can't wait to see Kelly's take on Cass-its going to be epic. Feel free to reach out if you have and Cass questions!

That detective comics run is amazing and really what got me on board the Cass Cain is the Best train

bill's avatar

I had literal tears a few times during that run. And the epicness of issue 955 when Cass took down hundreds of LoS ninjas-perfection!

CASSANDRA CAIN! (Wait, is Batgirls ending? Don't tell me if you know. I'll handle it.)

This is just getting better and better...

I have been DC free for 11 ½yr. Now that they are bringing in Kelly Thompson (in a title so up her alley - Birds Of Prey) , I'm returning. I'm having mixed feelings, but ultimately I can't wait to read this.

Curse you, DC!"

Just so you know. 😉

Kelly Thompson's avatar

Wow! Thank you for sharing that with me and I hope you will not regret it -- I'll do my best to make sure you don't! ;D

Do what you do. It'll be great. I just ask that, if possible, references from New 52 and newer be explained.

Oh, if you can find a way to bring Velma Dinkley in...I wouldn't complain. 😉

I don't know much about Cassandra, except that fans seem to be crazy about her! Is it true that she doesn't speak? Hence the mask stitched closed, I guess.

Kelly Thompson's avatar

When she was first introduced, she didn't speak (or read).

She was trained to be the perfect assassin -- and so she was raised in perfect silence and taught to "read the body" -- one of the reasons she's considered one of the best fighters is because -- though this skill has maybe diminished a bit as she has learned to read and speak -- she can still "read" a person's body and thus be sort of half a second ahead -- which is of course a huge asset in a fight. Her father is the assassin David Cain and her mother is the assassin Shiva. Despite all of this, Cass is VERY good. She is one of the most pure "good" imo of all the Bat-characters.

Even though she now speaks (and reads) she is still a very laconic character -- she speaks more with actions than words.

I was thrilled when I heard you were writing the newest BOP book. Cass being on the team is just the cherry on top. I'm already counting down the days until September!

Fuzwadd's avatar

Oh, I probably will. I'm currently working on your back catalog. Jem will eventually need to be tackled. You're the first writer that I've done this for. (This would be that CDO I mentioned).

Kelly Thompson's avatar

Oh, that's cool! Thank you! Let me know your favs when you get into it. <3

This day-by-day roll out is so exciting! So much fun. I can't wait to see who's next!

Kelly Thompson's avatar

It is REALLY working. It's been time intensive but I truly cannot argue with the results so far. We've trended every day -- for most of the day! It's wild!

Robert Jones, Jr.'s avatar

And my guess for the next two Birds of Prey: HQ and RC. :)

Oop. You done went and surprised me. Okay, Zealot!

Can’t wait!! Congrats

I've always liked her, but some of the newer stories seem to really highlight her. I've very excited to see your take on these amazing characters in a time where the world seems more willing to see women as real people.

Fuzwadd's avatar

This is the perfect book for you. I know you'll kill it. Now I'm going to have to return to the universe that I successfully escaped. I fear my CDO will be the end of me.

Kelly Thompson's avatar

Thank you! I hope so. I can't wait to show you guys what Leo and Jordie are doing! First "action DPS" in issue 1 with Cass and Dinah...SWOON.

Andrea Johnson Beck's avatar

Beyond excited!!!

Chris's avatar

You know, you're finally going to get me to return to DC comics after fifteen years.

:)

Fuzwadd's avatar

I was thinking the same thing

Kelly Thompson's avatar

If this is true for either of you (or both) please let DC know I am responsible! lol

Chris's avatar

100% true. Don't want to point fingers at which series caused me to be done, but this book's announcement (and today's about Barda!) will be the first time back to this universe. Multiverse. Whatever things are these days. :)

This is so great -- can't wait to see what you guys are going to do with the book!
