Mattia De Iulis is, let’s face it, a comics making god. His art is absolutely breathtaking.
But it takes A WHILE to do what he can do. And rightly so, it’s legit magical. As a result, and knowing we want to be far ahead before we release actual issues of THE CULL, so we have as little lag between issues as possible, I’ve really been holding back on showing too much off.
But we’re getting closer and I just can’t keep some of these pages to myself anymore.
Here’s your first look at some finished unlettered pages from THE CULL #1*.
Story by me and Mattia. All art/colors by Mattia.
Gird your loins my lovelies cuz this book is gonna huuuuurt so good:
*These are selected pages — meaning they’re not continuous — i.e. this isn’t “the first five pages” or “five pages from the middle” etc.
Yup. Mysteries are afoot. Bring on the paaaaaaain.
I’ve got a lot of stuff to show off and tease in the next couple months, so you’re going to be hearing a lot from us here at 1979 Semi-Finalist Substack…but we’ll always try to make it extremely worth your while.
And here’s a question — what’s the greatest “Kids/Teens go on an insane adventure” narrative you’ve ever ingested? Bonus points for comic recs, but TV/Movies/Novels/Whatevers are all welcome!

It's so pretty. It hurts my eyes it's so pretty.
Fuuuuuuuuuck!! That’s mic-dropping good! Can’t wait to see this come together.
You know what I can’t get enough of? Even in my adult life- Adventures in Babysitting. I laugh way to hard at it, and it really makes me happy, even on my almost 40 year old heart.
Josh and Tyler really own the market on modern comics with the teen adventures, right? 4 Kids, and now WTFPFH? Brilliant stuff!
I really enjoy the young/teenage heroes books overall though from a Marvel/DC standpoint.
Young Justice by David/Nauck is my absolute favorite DC book ever released. I’ve read the entire run multiple times, and laugh/cry every time.
New X-Men by Kyle/Yost is also one of my favorite (and super underrated) X-books ever as well. The emotional toll that book took on me, especially after M-Day, will never be forgotten. It was like reading the hunger games with that body count! Avengers Arena was crazy like that too. GDamn Arcade... lol
