AHHHHH! Finally!
CAPTAIN MARVEL finally returns on WEDNESDAY with a new issue after a break that, while technically only two months, has felt like FOREVER.

So the big news a couple weeks ago was that my digital series with the incredible Gurihiru for Marvel Unlimited — IT’S JEFF — got nominated for an Eisner! This is honestly just absolutely awesome. Working with Gurihiru on Jeff was a bright spot in a very dark year, and I think the fans felt similarly in reading it. He was a necessary bit of lightness. And it would be a real honor to win an award for that. Proud of my boy, grateful for the immense talent of Gurihiru bringing it all to life.
I’m planning a big JEFF-STRAV-A-GANZA post when the rest of my stuff arrives (!!!) but I did want to make sure to link you all to the first official Jeff plush that’s available for pre-order.
Oh! We also got very cool KELLY THOMPSON CAPTAIN MARVEL OMNIBUS news since I last did one of these posts. I am very excited about this, I hope you guys are too.
I sorta opened with this, but CAPTAIN MARVEL #38 is finally out THIS WEEK!
Make sure to pick it up as it’s an exciting start to a brand new — slightly weird — but, I think, really important arc for our run. We’ve got the incredible Juan Frigeri and Alvaro Lopez splitting the art duties for a dual tale inside — very different looks — and with good reason. And of course we’ve also got the brilliant Jordie Bellaire doing coloring on both pieces of the story.
Juan Frigeri’s gorgeous Binary focused cover is a very deliberate call back to our issue #1 by Amanda Conner. Comics are fun!
There’s a preview of CAPTAIN MARVEL #38 up on AIPT if you haven’t checked it out yet and you’re into that kind of thing.

Two artists on issue #39 means two sneak peeks you lucky devils!

BLACK CLOAK
This is sorta a cheat! This isn’t technically from the book but Meredith did this awesome Black Cloak mermaid piece last weekend that I wanted to make sure everyone saw. And we definitely have more mermaids on the horizon in BLACK CLOAK so it sorta IS a sneak peek. :D
THE CULL
I can’t keep showing these… buuuuut I also can’t resist. So here’s another tiny taste from issue one of THE CULL and my brilliant co-creator Mattia De Iulis. An absolutely masterful exploration of light… and also my girl Lux. ;D
We all know the dates on these things are a mess, but hopefully CAPTAIN MARVEL dates have stabilized? Maybe?
CAPTAIN MARVEL #38 - 6/1/22
BLACK CLOAK CHAPTER 5 - 6/27/22
CAPTAIN MARVEL #39 - 7/19/22
BLACK CLOAK CHAPTER 6* - 7/25/22
CAPTAIN MARVEL #40 - 8/17/22
*Not the cover for BC Chapter 6
Adam came home after a long work trip away (we’re talking months) so we’ve stocked up about a billion shows and movies to watch. It’s going to keep us very busy. Between those and my increasingly grim deadlines I’m pretty booked up for… the foreseeable future.
We started UNDER THE BANNER OF HEAVEN first up because we both love detective stories and also Andrew Garfield (though I believe I love Garfield MORE). So far Garfield is great but the series itself is a bit of a mixed bag. I like it more than Adam does, but I can see why people, especially those that don’t know anything about Mormon religion, history, or culture, might be struggling with it. It definitely asks a lot of the viewer.
We also started TASKMASTER SERIES 13 (YouTube/Channel 4) — and it is already a very good season. Thank the universe for Taskmaster. I feel like it kept us alive and sane during the pandemic and… I don’t know if people are just tired of there being a pandemic but… that shit is not over people! (aka I still very much NEED Taskmaster in my life).
I like it when the right people win THE CIRCLE (Netflix).
I am loving this season of TOP CHEF (Bravo). I almost didn’t watch it…I don’t know, because I was feeling mad at Texas? LOL. But that was stupid and I got over it, and while the location hasn’t been particularly exciting it’s been an incredibly diverse group of chefs and maybe the most talented group yet? Given some of the praise being handed out it certainly feels like it. I’m VERY into everyone in the final group to be honest… they all feel like they deserve the win… but I also can’t help rooting for Sarah to win. Her food seems divine, but mostly I just enjoy HER as a human being, she’s genuninely VERY funny in a sort of wry self-aware way, and I love seeing that in people, it’s just so damn charming. Anyway, very excited for a spectacular finale.
I’ve been watching the new series THE STAIRCASE (HBOMAX), even though I’ve already seen the documentary. And y’know what? Still compelling. The cast is fantastic. I’m actually not a huge Colin Firth fan but he’s giving an incredible performance as Peterson. It’s on one hand completely unremarkable (normal dad shit that I feel like a lot of us recognize in our own families/fathers) and then on the other hand it’s completely insane and very much the opposite of what a lot of us recognize. Pretty fascinating.
I somehow missed TIG (Netflix) a documentary from 2015 about one of my favorite comedians, Tig Notaro. It’s not revolutionary or anything as a film, but I really enjoyed it, and if you like Tig Notaro’s comedy or maybe just are a fan of good funny people going through really bad shit and still coming out the other side of it, not only humanity intact, but changed and still able to be brilliant and funny and good, I recommend it.
I did a small (not complete in any way) BUFFY re-watch (and some ANGEL S5) a little bit this past month and it left me with a lot of thoughts. If I can shape them into anything reasonably cohesive I’ll share them. For now though… I’m still just thinking.
This remains my favorite thing I’ve seen in a very long time. I mean, it really is absolute perfection.
This is apparently a thing, and I’m feeling real old, but also grateful to now know it?
Currently reading: The novel NIGHTBITCH by Rachel Yoder, which I really like and which has the greatest title and cover design (though I had to work pretty hard to get the paperback edition I wanted)… and this just happened. Yay!
This is one of my favorite photos of Monarch in a long time. It was really late at night and I was working in the living room alone. And just happened to look over and see this staring right at me:
Adorable and hilarious. And I’d never really seen him do this before. But he also freaked me out by not moving or blinking or anything for A WHILE. I think I finally had to move the chair to make sure he was okay.
He was fine. Just very special.
All right. That’s it for this one. I’ll be talking to you guys again later this week to reveal our big BLACK CLOAK contest winner! In the meantime, hug your people close. <3
