I’ve been dreading this week because I truly loved this run. One one hand it’s the grand finale, but on the other hand it’s the end. But, I’m looking forward to Cull and BoP.
And just throwing it out there....Marvel needs to give you a Spider-Man teamup series. It’s a license to print money!
It has been pretty amazing to see how you've walked the line of making sure Carol remained fully three-dimensional. Yeah, we know she's powerful, but you gave her very ways to still grow in power (no easy feat). At the same time, you made her earn that growth. But that's only one dimension of her. She grew on a personal level. She struggled. She failed. She lost. She was wrongly judged (I'm looking at you magic-users!).
By the end of this journey, we've come away with not just a powerful character, but a powerful character who is immensely respectful of that power. Not every hero goes there. (Yeah, a lot of them are aware they can hurt others, but truly showing that power respect isn't as common).
As odd as this sound, despite having no kids of her own, Carol's become a bit of a mother figure. She's been looking out for the growth and development of others—Rogue, Jenny, Kamala, Binary, and more. She loves them all and wants(ed) to see them grow and reach their own potential. This level of consideration didn't quite exist before (she occasionally showed up for Kamala, but in this run, her love felt a broader part of her persona).
I've said it before, but thank you Kelly. I'm extremely grateful for all you've done for Carol, her growing family, and all of us who love her so much (and even more now... if that was ever possible).
I do think Carol is probably the least like a mother of most of the women I've written -- but she's an incredible leader and teacher and she gives (to me) very "your best and most trusted aunt" vibes, y'know? And doing that for lots of other young people is super powerful.
Yeah, I didn't truly mean "a mother". Having become a mother between Kelly Sue's run and yours, there's a protectiveness and "looking out for the kids" perspective that I've developed that I also now recognize in Carol. I suppose aunt covers that (I don't have experience with that).
Can't tell you how much i loved every minute of your time with Carol, the fullness of her character and the family you built around her was just perfect and just like you and no doubt everyone else the feeling is bittersweet that it's come to an end. Thank you so much for a thrilling four years, truly legendary 💖
I came back to comics because of Carol -- and while i haven't picked up $50 yet, I find your take on her has been stellar. You nailed everything that Kelly Sue re-established for her AND let her grow and change AND expanded her "Carol Corps." It's been an awesome ride, and it's bittersweet to see you leave the title!
Having finished the final issue of your Captain Marvel run, I just want to say thank you.
Thank you for deepening my love for Carol Danvers. Captain Marvel isn't just a powerful superhero, she's a relatable human being. She has feelings and she has flaws, just like all of us. She struggles and she overcomes. She just does her freakin' best. This run was more than just a superhero book, it at times felt like a character study of Carol, dissecting her and helping her grow as a person.
Thank you for empowering women. Comics have always been a bit of a boy's club, both on the creation side and on the reader side. I grew up reading my brother's comics, but when he quit spending his allowance money on them, I stopped reading, too. When I came back to comics a few years ago, your Captain Marvel series was one of the first I picked up. It was also one of the things that made me dig deeper into the industry. I've always been big on books where women lift each other up and help each other succeed. It's not something that's seen a whole lot in comics (or in TV shows or in movies), there's frequently a man behind the scenes doing the heavy lifting and saving the day in the end. Carol doesn't need that, she's enough. Her friends and found family are enough. All of us women are enough and we are all stronger than we give ourselves credit for.
Congratulations on an amazing run. I'm so excited to see what you do in the future! I've been loving Black Cloak so much and I'm very excited to explore The Cull and Birds of Prey when they come out. You have a lifelong fan in me! <3
It truly pleases me to know that readers like you not only enjoyed the book, but really connected to it and "got it" on a deeper level. Thanks for taking the time to share it with me. <3
Even though I'm hyped for your BOP run, I'm sad that your CM run is ending. You're my favorite Carol writer. Your take on her will be well remembered and sorely missed.
Thank you for your wonderful run! Amongst the wonderful pantheon of Captain Marvel writers you wrote my favorite iteration of the character. Carol's empathy, humor, intelligence, and passion radiated off the page along with her guilt and doubt. Captain Marvel has been "my character" ever since Carol changed her name and costume and I never related to her more than during run. Looking forward to everything that comes next ♥️💙💛
gah I need to get to the comic store tonight. no spoilers anyone! unless Emma Frost actually _is_ at the #50 party, then i'll feel super cool. I mean, incredibly wrong with my "who's who at the party?" guesses. Definitely going to ask you to sketch her in if/when we cross paths at a convention Kelly.
Thank you for all the great stories with Carol and her friends and foes. Ovi and the Brood (so gross). They are all tied for just the worst. And some absolutely peak Jess/Carol interactions. Carol's apartment windows may never be the same. So much more too.
looking forward to new Black Cloak as always. The wings on the cover look so good.
I don't think there's anything super spoilery -- it's a pretty quiet issue -- more about dealing with grief and personal accountability/guilt/etc. -- and reaching for those you love. Hope you like it!
Yeah, we can all see that big things are coming to Black Cloak! ;D
Each issue, each arc just brought Carol “higher, further, faster”!
Kelly, you managed to take me through a visceral journey with each issue: what makes Carol Danvers tick, what are her fears, her weaknesses, her strengths…What makes Carol Danvers human and what makes Captain Marvel a heroine.
I’m so sad that it’s over, that’s come to an end, but god what an amazing 4-year journey!
Thank you Kelly and to your team for giving us the best Carol’s ever been!
Any chance you’d sell the omnibus signed on your shop (which shows temporarily closed)? I would love to buy both parts signed by you, if possible 🙏🏻❤️
The problem with the omnibus is... well, several. It's very expensive to ship to folks, so that's not great (and it's awkward and not that convenient to ship) -- it's also so expensive that it's hard for me to keep a few on hand. So I probably will not be having it in the shop. I'm sorry. :(
I’m not in the US, which is the main reason why I only buy digital. But I would do almost the impossible to try get a signed copy of these two-part omnibus 🙈
It’s gotten me nervous to hear they ship awkwardly, seeing how I would need to get them shipped to Miami or GA and from there someone would ship them out of the country to me (and as you can imagine, that gets very expensive, but for this amazing run + Carol? I’ll invest in it lol).
Is this not wise? 🙈 would the book suffer physical damage of some kind?
Perhaps you could get some kind of repurposed public transport vehicle to assist in all kinds of non-traditional shipping needs and challenges. A type of... Omni... bus, as it were.
That final issue was fantastic, Kelly. A beautiful ode to your entire run, Carol’s character growth and the future of characters around her. I will try not to be sad that it’s over, but I will be happy that this book happened. 🥹
I have to admit that you really pulled it off; I was more interested and excited by all the relationships that were visited in this story and ran out of time to get sad. It was wonderful! I'm so glad that you got to spend a whole issue crossing all those t's and dotting all those i's. Carol has changed and grown so much, and this will be part of her history going forward. And that Black Cloak cover is fantastic!

Aw, thank you.
It didn't go great for me my first time writing Spider-Man. I don't think it's in the (near) future -- but maybe I'll get another shot someday!

Kelly
Congrats on the final issue of Captain Marvel! The Black Cloak #6 cover is amazing, can't wait to read it.
Thanks, Mike.
Yeah, it's definitely one of my favorite coves Meredith has done. <3
Thank you for all of it! Excited to see what more you have in the works.
Yeah, it's about to get real exciting around here again! :D
Yayyy! Can't wait.

Me too.
And thank you. <3
Congrats, Kelly. What a massive accomplishment and a beautiful final issue. Also didn't hurt to have Jeff as a party shark.
Thanks, Chip. You're out here making it look easy -- I like to make it look as hard as possible so people KNOW it's an accomplishment. ;D

I want the new black cloak so baaaad
It's turning out very sad and very violent and also hopefully very good? I hope you guys will love it, I'm sorry for the delay!
please tell me Black Cloak is going to last forever
I don't know about forever, but we'll do it as long as we can manage!
I'll take it!

How about signed bookplates?

You could call it the busomni.
