We’ve got a post full of cool (and less) comics news today so let’s dig in!
First of all we got this bit of news yesterday about SCARLETT #1 and it’s preeeetty exiting I must say. I joked on twitter that good news comes in threes — I’m not currently planning a hat trick — but I’d be delighted if the universe wanted to send me another nice surprise. ;D
Before we get to the less cool news — let’s stick with the COOL stuff — Meredith is doing an AMA on League of Comic Geeks Tomorrow! She’ll be in and out tomorrow giving her answers to your questions — but you can actually submit your questions now at this link!
ALSO! Meredith is at PHXFF (Phoenix Fan Fusion Con) this weekend (Friday through Sunday) if you want to stop by and get issues signed, etc. She’s at Booth A1419! Go say hi if you’re in Phoenix!
Okay, now the less cool news — I don’t call it bad news, because it’s the right news for the book — so that we can bring you the best book possible — with the quality you expect — but I understand it’s frustrating nonetheless and I’m sorry.
BLACK CLOAK #7 had to be pushed back from June to August. The new release date is 8/21/24.
The two month push is in part to hopefully ensure there are no additional delays. The reasons for the delay — without getting too in the weeds — is a lot of things but mostly Meredith and I have both had some health and family stuff that have created delays (everything is fine!) but the fact that it was happening a bit to both of us meant it was even harder to absorb those delays into the schedule without ramifications.
The good news is, now that we’ve gotten through the business of moving it, we can start talking about and promoting it a bit more here. As mentioned previously, Meredith has done a ton of new character designs we’ve got ready to show off, and I’ve already prepped our second Black Cloak Character Contest, so we’ll have lots of fun here over the summer leading up to the release. For now I’m just going to remind you of the first two released covers — for issues #7 (August) and #8 (September). Art and colors by Meredith McClaren, cover design by Rian Hughes.
I’m truly excited about where this book is going… and Meredith’s pages are somehow even cooler and more interesting that ever. I just love this world you guys! <3
I’ve been so busy I feel like I haven’t gotten to hype some of these upcoming things enough yet — and we’ve got some incredibly cool covers coming up for SCARLETT — and not just issue 1 — that I wanted to shine a light on.
These are the covers from Skybound — some awesome offerings — including a few still unrevealed — a 1:50 Leonardo Romero Variant (my personal fav), a 1:100 Jonboy Meyers Foil Variant (I believe Scarlett and Storm Shadow are on this cover), and a 1:250 David Mack Variant (also has both Scarlett and Storm Shadow I believe). There’s also a blank sketch variant, not pictured.
In addition to the 9 Skybound covers, there are an additional 6 Store Exclusive Covers. Pretty cool!
But while gathering these to show of, I took a closer look at the covers for issue 2 and 3 and wow, some really cool covers in there.
Edited to add: CBNS — the shop that commissioned the Scarlett #1 cover on the motorcycle — center bottom row of the image above — has generously offered all readers a discount if they’re interested in that cover. Just use the code cbns10 at checkout on their site to get 10 percent off. https://www.cbnsexclusives.com
SCARLETT #2 (JULY)
Series artist Marco Ferrari:
ANNIE WU:
GLEB MELNIKOV CONNECTING:
There are also two spoiler covers that have not yet been revealed — one by Karl Kerschl (Open Order) and one by Paolo Rivera (Incentive). I haven’t seen these but those artists are terrific.
SCARLETT #3:
These just debuted a few days ago. Marco Ferrari series artist:
MARCIO TAKARA:
JEFF SPOKES:
ERIC CANETE:
I love all of these! And the Takara cover — especially because it shows off Storm Shadow too — is hard to beat, but I think I have to pick Canete for my fav on issue 3 - just an incredibly visceral and powerful piece.
While we’re talking covers… these Karen Darboe POWERPUFF GIRLS connecting variants for the first three issues are incredible. Absolutely to die for!
And I believe these come in both regular and clean dress. Man, this thing should be a poster!
Okay, in fairness, this could also have gone under “bad news” — as I am sorry to report that I have NOT shipped all orders. If you ordered something in the last month or so, it’s probably still in my home office, partially ready to go! The plan is for everything to go out by next Tuesday — I had to stop in the middle because I had to dig in on some overdue work — including one of the biggest scripts of my career thus far — but I apologize, as it’s incredibly annoying to wait for things to arrive in the mail. Ordering from my shop is never fast (I am only one person!) but this is truly frustratingly late and I apologize.
I also want to say that I really appreciate nobody hassling me about it. You’re all shockingly patient and I think I’ve only received a single (very polite!) email inquiring — mostly because they were afraid it had been lost. So thank you, yet again, for the extreme patience. We’ll get there!
The store is still open if you want to order (though understand we are a bit backed up) — and the site has been updated with BIRDS OF PREY #9 and the webstore code from last week (for paid backers only) is still good. Here’s a link to that.
“Announcements” seems a bit grand for what’s in this section, but in life you have to use the banners that brought you to the party or something like that.
THE CULL TPB got a terrific 5-star review from Capes & Tights, calling it a “Visual Masterpiece.”
BIRDS OF PREY has been getting terrific reviews overall, but I particularly liked this 5/5 review from Comicbook.com for our most recent issue:
I also wanted to shout out Ray Goldfield at Geek Dad, who has been a great advocate for our BIRDS OF PREY from day one, and I’ve really enjoyed some of his reviews.
I did a Livestream with Omar at NEAR MINT CONDITION and we talked about all sorts of things… mostly comics.
I am currently trapped in a hurricane of interviews/podcasts… a typhoon of interviews/podcasts?… I don’t know… whatever it is it’s wild and destabilizing! But that means a lot of links coming for you guys. Don’t feel obligated to read/listen to everything, but I appreciate the support either way.
Now go leave Meredith a question for tomorrow before you forget! ;D
Later guys!
Kelly
Look at all this goodness! Congrats on the Eisner noms, once again. You absolutely deserve *all of them*! Can’t wait for all these new stories too (and the return of Black Cloak!!!) going to be amazing!
Just got back from my local comic book store and got every cover they had! The story is amazing! Between this and Birds of Prey you are absolutely rocking it.
