Let’s kick this off with a few of the previously hidden SCARLETT #1 covers I mentioned. They’re obviously all out in the wild today, because today is RELEASE DAY!
First up, obviously, my beloved Leonardo Romero’s 1:50 offering. I adore this one:
And this is a Foil Variant by Meyers, which I have to admit, in hand, is very cool. In person it looks almost like it has a sort of grey sheen on it, and then you tip it in the light and it just lights up, very cool.
And this is a really gorgeous Mack variant which is both super rare 1:250 and features the elusive Storm Shadow.
These are all in my shop — including the super rare expensive ones — and you can get it cheaper there now (and signed) compared to ebay, but the incentive ones are still pretty pricey even in my shop. Also, fair warning, I’m still running behind on shipping, so no new orders will go out until next week, as this week is reserved for getting all existing orders out the door. They’re coming everyone, I’m sorry! I promise that you will forgive me in several months when some of these comics I’m writing now are on shelves! <3
Also, there’s a new webstore code for paid readers after the paywall.
Oh! And CBNS — the shop that commissioned this special SCARLETT #1 cover (below) has generously offered all 1979 Substack readers a discount if they’re interested in that cover. Just use the code cbns10 at checkout on their site to get 10 percent off.
In addition to SCARLETT #1 releasing today, BIRDS OF PREY #10 released yesterday. Here’s a preview of BOP at AIPT, including a pretty good tease (though a bit wordy for my tastes, who wrote this!?!) of our new girl Cela.
Here’s one of my favorite (less wordy!) moments from the issue:
Also, Javier Pina’s “dino world” next issue is so fucking beautiful it’s gonna set your eyes on fire. And I saw some tiny sketches from Sophie for issue 12 and I CANNOT WAIT.
As I mentioned last time, I’ve really been doing the podcast and interview rounds lately — a combination I think of the SCARLETT launch, POWERPUFF GIRLS announcement, and Eisner news — so I’m linking to as many below as reasonable. Don’t get too sick of me, it’s okay to just say no sometimes!
First up, I got asked by MEN’S HEALTH to contribute to this very cool list of comics by comics creators. The guidelines were simply to pick three of my favorite comics and briefly explain why to potential readers. But they went out to a ton of creators so there are a LOT of recommendations here. Basically it’s lots of great creators recommending lots of great books, how can you go wrong?
As most of you likely know, MULTIVERSITY, a place for terrific comics coverage is ending. As someone that worked once as a freelancer in comics content/coverage I know how incredibly thankless and low pay it is, so it’s hard in some ways to lament its passing. At the same time, those places tend to be filled with people who really love this medium and are willing to sacrific their time/energy to share it with others. The site, and all their contributors will be hugely missed in the comics landscape.
I was super honored that Robbie Pleasand would chose to highlight IT’S JEFF #1 as his final review. Bittersweet. Thanks, Robbie & thanks Multiversity.
I talked to Byron at Cryptid Creator Corner about SCARLETT via Comic Book Yeti.
Podcaster (and 1979 Substacker!) Lodro Rinzler and I had a ton of fun on his new X-Men Horoscopes podcast:
Ernie Carothers at Blerd Without Fear talked to both me and the fantastic Paulina Ganuchea about THE POWERPUFF GIRLS:
And did this great deep dive cast a few months ago — BEGINNINGS WITH ANDY BECKERMAN PODCAST:
Marco Ferrari and I went on the ODPH Podcast to talk SCARLETT:
AND they gave us a terrific 9.7/10 for SCARLETT #1 on their site. Thanks, guys!
Liam McGuire is reviewing comics on his new site COMIC FRONTIER now, and he kindly included SCARLETT #1 in the mix. Thanks, Liam!
All right, kids, time for that fun paywall! See you next time! <3
