BIRDS ROUND UP -- PLUS X-MEN WAR 2.0 - PART 4
(how do you solve a problem like Kwannon and the Braddocks?)
We’re in a funny new model where because we’re running the X-Men War game and also Margot & Layla vote posts, AND some big new books are launching…there are sorta too many posts to be reasonable. Ah, the irony.
So I’m going to attempt a merge between a post for everyone and then partway through you’ll hit a paywall and that will be for the folks playing the X-Men game, okay? Let’s try it!

First up.
BIRDS OF PREY has finally launched! It is out there in all its gorgeous glory and we are getting an absolutely incredible response — both in reviews and in reader response on social media etc. It’s maybe the most reviews I’ve ever had for a debut book? And you can’t put too much weight on “number of reviews” — it’s hardly some hard science — but it does tend to generally indicate “interest in a book” — so that’s great for us and our hopefully lengthy future as a book.
And those reviews we’re getting are mostly great. And even the less great ones — well, most of the ones I read talked about how great the book is and then complained because character X isn’t present or character Y IS present, etc., and I gotta be honest with you… that makes me basically dismiss the entire review. So, pretty much all raves are left. ;D
Like before, I don’t want to over link here, but I did really enjoy this piece about several DC titles debuting from THE BEAT and they also called us out in a separate lovely review here.
I also did this interview with Jenna at Comicbook.com.
Anyway, thank you all for all of your support and encouragement. I’ve been working on BOP for about a year in some fashion or another and it’s amazing to finally have it out there in the world. I hope you guys love it.
With that in mind, I have added all* my BIRDS OF PREY #1 comps to the webstore. Fair warning, these are marked up a bit based on some of my ebay research (just trying to avoid a run on them from flippers — really want them to go to backers and longtime fans, y’know? — but aware that that still drives the price up a bit for you guys. And I’m sorry about that).
*I have not made any of the blank sketch covers available as I have plans for them. Hopefully ones that will mostly benefit you guys here. There are also some new It’s Jeff loaded up, more Harley Quinn, and updated The Cull and Black Cloak issues — though The Cull — except the Founders Variants are almost sold out. <3
BIRDS OF PREY #2 doesn’t have as much Barda and Cass as issue 1 (I say this now for all of you to PREPARE YOURSELVES MENTALLY) but this is probably my favorite Barda panel from the issue:
Oh wait, maybe it’s this one. She cracks me up:
Art and colors on both of those are Leonardo Romero and Jordie Bellaire. Lettering by Clayton Cowles.
But how ‘bout now we explore a new world with Mattia De Iulis on THE CULL #2:
So gorgeous.
I wasn’t going to show you anything else…but Meredith is doing so many great BLACK CLOAK Vol 2 designs that I can’t resist. Renna is gonna FUCK. YOU. UP. just look at her! Ahhhh!
Okay, we’re hitting that paywall now. Thanks for reading folks, I am super grateful to have you all here — even on the free tier — as it helps keep us connected — especially as social media is crumbling around us a bit.
But if you want to support the Substack to help support me and help me build more and better books, please consider subscribing to one of the paid tiers — which in addition to help me, gets you access to all sorts of cool stuff — like the entirety of BLACK CLOAK VOLUME 1 — you could be reading it all RIGHT NOW!
You’d also get the hit Image comic THE CULL (issue 1 out now); access to all past and future paid posts including more THE CULL; more BLACK CLOAK coming in 2024; exclusive sneak peeks; process posts; subscriber only discounts; entry into prize contests & giveaways; access to MARGOT & LAYLA MUST DIE original fiction; X-MEN WAR voting; access to the community we’re building through voting and commenting; and so much more.
