I did a double jinx on myself with this one, guys. And you might think those would cancel each other out, ALAS, NO.

Double jinx? I can hear you asking.

Well, first I promised you last time that I’d make sure you guys had this issue in the morning the day of release. FIRST JINX.

Then I was doing a podcast on Tuesday and specifically mentioned to the podcaster that FINALLY I was going to be on time for you guys this week. DOUBLE JINX.

Guess what happened then?

That night… literally WHILE I was working on the files I had some kind fatal hardware failure on my (NOT EVEN THREE YEARS OLD) Mac Laptop.

So that kicked off about 24 hours of trying to repair/recover/replace. And then (after you have to replace it for $$$$, because o course I did) all the extra time trying to get your machine back to some semblance of normalcy — programs downloaded, data uploaded, blah blah blah.

Fortunately, the raw BLACK CLOAK files are well backed up (beyond my puny machine) but I still had to re-do all the prep work to get us ready to upload.

Anyway, we’re circling back to normalcy, and a full… 28-ish hours late, we’re here. Apologies again — for the delays and for sounding like a broken record.

Everyone, please meet Death Shard DINAAL created by reader Daniel Palomino and Sprite LEDRA created by reader Lodro Rinzler.

DINAAL is a Death Shard who goes by they/them. They have mastered the art of appearing busy, are afraid of math (who isnt?!), knows SOME karate and has a terrible sense of direction. They run the Front Desk as Kiros Supermax Prison.

LEDRA is a female Sprite. She is always ready to go out, would kill for a slice of cake, hates cold weather, and loves to bathe in the blood of her enemies (metaphorical of course. probably). Ledra is a “Prison Traveler,” meaning she handles security of moving the prisoners.

Dinaal and Ledra first show up in BLACK CLOAK #10 (out in November) AND because I’m running so behind in announcing this, I can even show off a panel — huzzah!

Hayden and I did a truly insane amount of ABSOLUTE WONDER WOMAN PR this week — and I’m going to link to it all here even though it probably deserves its own post — fair warning, despite our best efforts, there’s a lot of overlap in the materials — but there IS also a five-page colored (unlettered) preview with most of them as well — so give one or two of these a look if you’ve been anxious for more ABSOLUTE WONDER WOMAN teasers and haven’t seen them floating around social media yet.

FOC is Monday 9/30 and I am confident this will sell out — so if you want on board for a first printing I would definitely call your shops.

You might be wondering which thing I am apologizing for… and it’s ALL OF IT.

I am so sorry everything is so late, guys. I promise things are on the upswing and getting better, but though I swore to myself (and to you) that I would have these up first thing on day of release I have had aboooouuuuut 6 hours of sleep over the last three days so I am pretty on the edge. And I don’t know if you’re aware but I am WAY TOO OLD FOR THAT SHIT. I am no longer 25. This body does not just do whatever the hell I tell it to do. Also, for some reason the site is being a huge pain in the ass and it took about 10 times as long as it should to load these files. AHHHH MY KINGDOM FOR THE POWER TO STOP TIME!

ANYWAY.

The good news is, things are getting much much better. I’ve still got a rough month+ ahead of me to get fully back on track — but we’re getting close to a point where life (and deadlines and promises) will all be a bit more back to normal. And I don’t want to over promise (always a mistake!) but I’m more clear headed and creative and in control of my work than I have been in… I don’t know, at least since the pandemic and that feels GREAT. And it especially feels great because I do not want this to be the Substack of broken promises! We’re better than that! And I really cannot thank all of you for being so patient with me.

The other good news is that IT’S STILL BLACK CLOAK DAY!

And I apologize for it coming in a bit late. I’ll try to make sure they’re up by 9am/12pm in the future at the latest, but we had to take Monarch in for a sort of emergency vet visit (he’s okay) and my schedule is so packed right now that was enough of wrench to delay this.

For the uninitiated, we played a little game while building BLACK CLOAK Volume 1 to let one reader create their own character (using the game below) and Meredith then designed that character and we wrote them into the book.

To play the game — you simply use the steps below to build your character and then post your results in the comments and you’ll be entered to win the chance for that character to be written into a future issue of BLACK CLOAK in a small (speaking) role. Last time reader Nicole won with her adorable Goblin Nycila — who showed up in a few panels of Volume 1 (and will also show up in Volume 2). [If you’d like to see the first game and/or the post with the winner… well, now you have those links]

I kept the basis of the previous game, but I added some new classes and mixed things up a bit so that people would be more likely to get different results than last time.

Post your character details in the comments by Tuesday, August 28th by 11:59 pm PST and it will then be entered into a blind drawing. I’ll draw one name from the creations and that person will have their character designed by Meredith and written in to a future issue of BLACK CLOAK.

Some of you may have seen yesterday that BLACK CLOAK #1 sold out at the retailer level thanks to the people demanding it! ;D

So we’re getting a second printing for issue 1. This is the dream everyone! YES! You can see the second printing cover below by Meredith and Rian.

(also, something that I didn’t expect which delighted me, is that Black Cloak art/promo is all over Image’s website and twitter right now as you can see from the link above. It’s surreal and absolutely awesome).

One thing to note is that because of the second printing, we moved the issue 2 release date back by one week — so that it could have the same FOC date as the second printing. Which is supposed to be good for both books (it also moves issue 2 to a much lighter release week, which isn’t a terrible thing either). So don’t panic, nothing has gone wrong, we’re just doing our best over here to maximize readers exposure to the book.

And on that note, thank you for all your help with that. I have seen so many of you talking about the book and sharing it with your people and your networks and it really means a lot to see that — and us selling out has a ton to do with that grassroots word of mouth stuff. SO THANK YOU.

In other news, I’m still working my way through our Founders mailings. I’m sorry it’s taken longer than I’d hoped, I was pretty sick last week (still no covid, though!) but I’m slowly getting through them now that I’m better. And this week the emails will also go out for everyone else who won a prize in our drawings, so that I can get those mailings underway as well.

Additionally, while all “paid subscriptions” are still on pause (meaning new readers can still subscribe, but only for the free newsletter and nobody is being charged right now, regardless of tier level) — there was a miscommunication with Substack — they told me that once I paused subscriptions, paid content would be open to all backers — but that turned out to be 100% wrong.

And that’s both good and bad. On the one hand it’s good because those posts behind a paywall were behind a paywall for a reason, y’know? But on the other hand, for people who would LIKE to pay to access the paid content but can’t right now (which at least one reader has emailed me about) it’s… not great.

As far as I know there is no real solve to this right now. The best solve I can do is just get the Substack un-paused at the earliest opportunity. And I’m working on that, but I don’t want do that prematurely as I take all of this pretty seriously and if the last year has taught me anything it’s that over-committing (even with the best of intentions) just leads to disappointment for everyone. So I’m focused on getting this right and I appreciate your support and patience as I try to do that. You all have truly been awesome over the last year+ and if nothing else I hope you’re all enjoying the success of BLACK CLOAK and taking a bit of pride in it — as it wouldn’t be possible without you guys.

The variants you Founders receive will NOT be widely available. There are less than 300 of these in existence and more importantly they will not be available in shops. Meredith and I will have some of these we’re selling ourselves — directly through our websites, at cons, and/or maybe having a third party sell signed versions, but they will not be out there widely available in the wild.

I was holding out on showing this cover in part because there’s something coming up in the story soon related to Takas and I both didn’t want to draw too much attention to a future story point with this cover — but suffice to say it’s still adorable now, and as readers you’ll appreciate it even more later! ;D

It will be clean dress — so it will look just like this — in all it’s adorable Taka glory.

A lot of what I have been busy with (off and on) over the last couple months was preparing BLACK CLOAK #1 for print. As this is something I haven’t done myself before, there was a dramatically steep learning curve. Everyone at Image has been crazy helpful and nice but I’m not gonna lie, it’s been a struggle!

The good news is I’ve learned a lot and the book is looking GORGEOUS and we are getting a truly awesome response so far from reviewers and retailers. So I’m excited (yet still terrified. fun!)

I’m going to debut those special Founders Only covers in a few days, but because we added some covers at the last minute I wanted to show those off. So, even though I LOVE getting Variant Covers, I don’t really like overwhelming readers with them, as it quickly can feel like too much.

However, we had a small screw up that meant none of the covers for issue 1 were marked as Incentive Covers — which CAN really hurt your order numbers — not always, but we didn’t want to risk it. And because I work with some of the absolute best people around, I was able to call in some weekend favors (still paid of course!) from Mattia and Meredith to do new Variant Covers for issue 1. And in a happy accident we realized that we’d used the wrong Tula Lotay cover for our clean dress variant — which meant we hadn’t actually used that “sketch” — which got us to a total of 3 covers. You may have seen the first two which debuted on AIPT last week, but I’m going to show them all here now, starting with the final unrevealed cover by Tula Lotay. And since her cover is the last (except the Founders Only cover) I guess I’ll just start with the last cover and work toward the main/first cover.

The past couple weeks has been consumed with BLACK CLOAK print stuff — including getting a bunch of retailers comp packages to help promote the book — looks like about 50 shops (most in the US but a few in Canada) are getting packages — as they were the fastest to claim them — so if you have a great shop, keep your eyes out for our swag in your shop and let me know if you see any of it in the wild! The poster is PREEEETY eye popping — wanna see? ;D

And the really good news for those of you who are Founders from year 1 — you’ll all be getting one of each of these (Signed 11x17 poster, vinyl sticker, and postcard) with your Signed Founders Variants in January. Plus the oversized foil postcard we showed you earlier in the year.

Also, for those of you that missed it yesterday, Image did a great little trailer for the book — feel free to give us a like (and leave a comment!) and share it around with anyone you think might dig BLACK CLOAK.

Oh! And you’ll all be happy to hear that so far we’re getting great advance reviews for issue 1!

Meredith and I have also done a bunch of podcasts — I’ll try to link them as we do them (but it’s been a lot and is hard to keep track!) — most aren’t out yet, but I had a terrific chat with Damon (who many of you may know from the comments section here — among other things) at Agents of Fandom:

Like…you guys haven’t even seen the insane cover that Mattia did for issue 3 of BLACK CLOAK… AND I’ve been so consumed with BC that we’re way overdue on some THE CULL teases too. Plus we haven’t even talked about all the media and end of the year lists and well, so much!
